The Spanish Verb ‘Ir’, Conjugation and Uses

Click Here to learn how to conjugate irregular Spanish verbs quickly and with ease

In Spanish the verb Irliterally means ‘to go’. It is one of the most irregular Spanish verbs and because of this it can take some time to completely master it’s use. Unfortunately, master it you must do, because it is also one of the most commonly used verbs in Spanish and it is also used in many expressions and is also frequently combined with other verbs too.

Ir conjugation patterns are complex, and each of it’s irregular tenses will be covered shortly but we will first look at how ir is used.

Ir is used to declare where you are going to or have been and also whatever you are going to do.

Using ir to express the act of going somewhere.

Spanish is the same as English when it comes to using the verb ‘to go’. In English we follow the verb ‘to go’ with ‘to’ to indicate the intended destination for example: I go to the cinema.  Spanish is the same as the verb ‘ir’ is followed by ‘a’. example: Voy al cineI go to the cinema.

*Please note that in Spanish if the noun is masculine (el cine), a becomes al (a + el = al) if the noun is feminine a la would be used)

Using ir to express something that is going to happen.

Again, ir is used exactly how the verb ‘to go’ is in English, to express that something is going to take place or happen!

  • Vamos a visitar a nuestros padres hoyWe are going to visit our parents today

As shown in the above example, the combination of the required conjugation of ir and ‘a’ precedes the infinitive of the action verb, in this case ‘visitar’to visit.
