Click Here to learn how to conjugate irregular Spanish verbs quickly and with ease

Mastering estar conjugation is of vital importance right from the start of your studies simply because the Spanish verb estar is used extensively from the start.

The conjugation of Estar is irregular in the present and preterite tenses in the indicative mood and in all of the tenses of the subjunctive so it makes sense to break down all of the conjugations of estar into individual posts each of which will cover a tense or mood. You will find learning estar conjugation much easier when doing so in smaller bitesize chunks rather than trying to master all the tenses at once and a list to all the respective posts is at the end of this post.

Estar is one of two Spanish verbs that mean ‘to be’ and is used when referring to position, location, action, condition and emotion. A good way to remember this is to remember the word PLACE; Ser, on the other hand, is used when referring to date, occupation, characteristics, time, origin and relation…remember the word DOCTOR!

Estar is also used as an auxilliary verb in the present progressive tense which is also covered in another post listed below. The one thing that you do need to know before going any further as it doesn’t really warrant a post all to itself are the past participle and the Gerund of Estar which are estado and estando respectively, they both follow the regular formation of stem plus -ado and stem plus -ando so shouldn’t be a problem to remember.
