Estar Present Progressive Tense
Click Here to learn how to conjugate irregular Spanish verbs quickly and with ease
Estar isn’t only used as a stand alone verb, it is also used as an auxiliary verb for every other verb, including itself, when used in the present progressive tense.
For those of you that do not know how the present progressive is formed it is quite simple to explain, simply place the Gerund of a verb after the present tense of the verb estar. The gerund, also known as the present participle, is basically the Spanish version of the ‘-ing’ which we would place on the end of verbs in English to state that we are actually in the process of performing an action.
In Spanish, if you were to say – I am walking – whilst you were actually doing so, you would use the present progressive and say ‘Estoy andando‘. You should always remember that the present progressive should ONLY be used whilst actually performing an action and not to describe an action that has either been performed before or after the present time.
Although estar in the present progressive isn’t too difficult to master it can be made a great deal easier if you use a verb trainer such as the program called verbarrator.
The verbarrator will make the task of learning verb conjugation, especially irregular verbs, much easier and you can find an honest review (mine!) of it here- verbarrator review should you wish to check it out.
