The Spanish subjunctive is often confusing to many students as it is a mood that is hardly ever used in English yet in Spanish it’s use is common, however the purpose of this specific post is not to explain the use of the subjunctive in Spanish but to look at the verb ir subjunctive conjugation which is completely irregular! Here are the conjugations of the subjunctive tenses for ir.

Present Subjunctive Ir Conjugation

yo vaya – I go
tú vays – you go (formal singular)
él/ella vaya – he/she go
usted vaya – you go (polite singular)
nosotros/as vayamos - we go
vosotros/as vayáis – you go (formal plural)
ellos/ellas vayan – they go
ustedes vayan – you go (polite plural)

Ir Imperfect Subjunctive

yo fuera or fuese - I used to go
tú fueras or fueses – you used to go (formal singular)
él/ella fuera or fuese – he/she used to go
usted fuera or fuese – you used to go (polite singular)
nosotros/as fuéramos or fuésemos – we used to go
vosotros/as fuerais or fueseis – you used to go (formal plural)
ellos/ellas fueran or fuesen – they used to go
ustedes fueran or fuesen – you used to go (polite plural)

*Please note the imperfect tense has a double set of forms, the “-ra” and the “-se” forms, which can be interchanged most of the time.

Ir Future Subjunctive Conjugation

yo fuere – I will go
tú fueres – you will go (formal singular)
él/ella fuere – he/she will go
usted fuere – you will go (polite singular)
nosotros/as fuéremos – we will go
vosotros/as fuereis – you will go (formal plural)
ellos/ellas fueren – they will go
ustedes fueren – you will go (polite plural)

*Note that the future tense in the subjunctive is rarely used today, but you may find it appearing in old books etc.

The future tense of the Spanish verb ‘ir’ is something of an anomaly as it is one of the only two tenses that ir is not irregular in, the other being the conditional.

Ir Future Tense Conjugation

• yo iré – I will go
• tú irás – you will go (formal singular)
• él/ella irá – he/she will go
• usted irá – you will go (polite singular)
• nosotros/as iremos – we will go
• vosotros/as iréis – you will go (formal plural)
• ellos/ellas irán – they will go
• ustedes irán – you will go (polite plural)

The imperfect tense is one of the two past tenses used most often in Spanish the other being the preterite, the Spanish verb ir is irregular in both of them and is one of only three verbs that are irregular in the imperfect tense!

Here is how ir is conjugated in the imperfect.

The Imperfect tense of Ir

• yo iba – I used to go
• tú ibas – you used to go (formal singular)
• él/ella iba – he/she used to go
• usted iba – you used to go (polite singular)
• nosotros/as ibamos – we used to go
• vosotros/as ibais – you used to go (formal plural)
• ellos/ellas iban – they used to go
• ustedes iban – you used to go (polite plural)

*Remember that the imperfect tense is used to describe an incomplete, without a definite beginning or end otherwise the preterite is used.

The preterite tense is one of those tenses that seems to be irregular no matter which verb you are learning…unfortunately, the Spanish verb ‘ir’ is no exception!

Ir conjugated in the Preterite tense

• yo fui - I went
• tú fuiste – you went (formal singular)
• él/ella fue – he/she went
• usted fue – you went (polite singular)
• nosotros/as fuimos – we went
• vosotros/as fuisteis – you went (formal plural)
• ellos/ellas fueron – they went
• ustedes fueron – you went (polite plural)

The confusion with the preterite conjugation of ir doesn’t end there either…for those of you that are quite astute in noticing that the preterite of ir is conjugated exactly the same as the preterite conjugation of ser – ‘to be’ congratulations.

My initial thought when starting to study both of these verbs was that there was some kind of misprint but that isn’t the case.

Ir – ‘to go’ is one of the most irregular verbs in the Spanish language and many students encounter the present tense conjugation of it very early on in their studies as it is a very commonly used verb, here is the conjugation of the presente.

Ir Present tense Conjugation

• yo voy – I go
• tú vas – you go (formal singular)
• él/ella va – he/she goes
• usted va – you go (polite singular)
• nosotros/as vamos – we go
• vosotros/as vais - you go (formal plural)
• ellos/ellas van – they go
• ustedes van – you go (polite plural)

In Spanish the verb ‘Ir‘ literally means ‘to go’. It is one of the most irregular Spanish verbs and because of this it can take some time to completely master it’s use. Unfortunately, master it you must do, because it is also one of the most commonly used verbs in Spanish and it is also used in many expressions and is also frequently combined with other verbs too.

Ir conjugation patterns are complex, and each of it’s irregular tenses will be covered shortly but we will first look at how ir is used.

Ir is used to declare where you are going to or have been and also whatever you are going to do.

Using ir to express the act of going somewhere.

Spanish is the same as English when it comes to using the verb ‘to go’. In English we follow the verb ‘to go’ with ‘to’ to indicate the intended destination for example: I go to the cinema.  Spanish is the same as the verb ‘ir’ is followed by ‘a’. example: Voy al cine – I go to the cinema.

*Please note that in Spanish if the noun is masculine (el cine), a becomes al (a + el = al) if the noun is feminine a la would be used)

Using ir to express something that is going to happen.

Again, ir is used exactly how the verb ‘to go’ is in English, to express that something is going to take place or happen!

• Vamos a visitar a nuestros padres hoy – We are going to visit our parents today

As shown in the above example, the combination of the required conjugation of ir and ‘a’ precedes the infinitive of the action verb, in this case ‘visitar’ – to visit.
