The Spanish Verb ‘Ir’ Imperfect Tense Conjugation (Pretérito Imperfecto)

The imperfect tense is one of the two past tenses used most often in Spanish the other being the preterite, the Spanish verb ir is irregular in both of them and is one of only three verbs that are irregular in the imperfect tense!

Here is how ir is conjugated in the imperfect.

The Imperfect tense of Ir

  • yo iba – I used to go
  • tú ibas – you used to go (formal singular)
  • él/ella iba – he/she used to go
  • usted iba – you used to go (polite singular)
  • nosotros/as ibamos – we used to go
  • vosotros/as ibais – you used to go (formal plural)
  • ellos/ellas iban – they used to go
  • ustedes iban – you used to go (polite plural)

*Remember that the imperfect tense is used to describe an incomplete, without a definite beginning or end otherwise the preterite is used.
