Deciding Upon an Online Spanish Language Course?
Why Has the Demand For Online Spanish Language Courses Gone Sky High?
The easy answer is that this is due to a combination of 3 factors; flexibility, cost and course quality. We will take a more in depth view of those factors in order to understand why Online Spanish Language courses have become the first choice for many students.
Flexibility
The days when we could plan out the structure of our lives pretty much to the letter every week are, in many cases, a long time gone. Modern day living requires extreme flexibility, constantly changing work schedules and shift patterns amongst other things make it extremely difficult to slot in any quality time with the family, never mind a regular Spanish class every week!
This is why online Spanish courses have taken off in such a big way, they allow the student to cut free from the structured classroom type course and study only when they have time to do so, and many of these courses also provide short concise lessons that can be slotted into a 10 minute tea or coffee breaks!
The biggest argument against the online Spanish course was the loss of the interactivity that a classroom of students offered; it was a valid argument, there is no better way to learn a language than by using it in a one to one, or a one to many, situation.
However, although this may have been the case a few years ago the advances that have been made in the online Spanish language sector have been rapid and significant. Forums, online classrooms, interactive webinars and online video tutoring, are all easily available and accessible. It is possible nowadays to speak to Spanish speakers who are sitting in front of their PC in their own living room in Buenos Aires in Argentina or Barcelona in Spain, this level of interactivity was impossible in the classroom and therefore the swing in popularity to the online course occurred.
Cost
Although cost has never been the main reason for the large swing to online learning it is however a major contributing factor. Classroom courses are expensive; the student has to pay enrolment fees, pay for course material and will even have to pay if they are unable to attend a lesson for one reason or another.
It was only a matter of time before people realized that they could learn Spanish at a fraction of the cost that a classroom course would cost them and make the switch.
Why is the cost of an online course so low in relation to a classroom course? Quite simply...overheads and production costs! No ongoing charges for renting a classroom, no teacher to pay for, no expensive course materials to pay for. Most online courses are digital, meaning that you download them and store them on your pc or laptop and print off only what you want or feel is necessary. All of them have mp3 files that allow you to listen to course work and lessons while on the move and many have interactive video, all in all you get an awful lot for your dollar compared to more traditional methods.
Quality
When the first Online Spanish Language courses became available online they were very basic yet still had a novelty following even though the quality was pretty poor. At that time the online course was not even in the same league as the traditional methods of learning Spanish. But as we all are aware the speed with which technology, especially on the internet, is developing, the online course wasn't going to be the poor relative for too long.
Anyone who has ever looked at, or purchased, an online course will tell you that you will not find better quality course material anywhere. The improvement has been immense and continues to improve as course providers are pushing that much harder to provide that little bit more than their competitors, which means there can only be one winner and that is you and I, the students of Spanish
The easiest way to put these points to the test is to test out some courses for yourself, most offer a free trial period, which is a real 'we have faith in our product' move, as it shouts 'quality product' at you. I mean, who would offer a free trial if there was any chance that your product was deemed bad? Who would buy it?
Conclusion:
The one thing that this article omits to mention is student success rates. How many students were happy that they reached a competent level of spoken Spanish in the timescales the courses marketed? In most cases user reviews are extremely positive but I will stick my neck out here and say that the student will always have the biggest say in the success of a course.
If a students' efforts are lacklustre so will the results be!
Online Spanish courses are extremely popular for a reason and it isn't because they are a fad! They are flexible, mobile, extremely good value for money and provide excellent, constantly updated course material that provide excellent results for students.
